From Dark to Light

One of the most common beauty questions here on Guam is, “How can I lighten my skin?” We need to understand first why we have darker skin before we can get a satisfactory answer. Generally, dark-skinned people have more melanin in their skin than light-skinned people. Melanin is the pigment produced by cells called melanocytes, and gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color. An overproduction of this pigment due to exposure to the sun, damage to the skin from acne or scars, or hormonal changes, just to name a few, may result in hyperpigmentation (localized darkening of the skin) and melasma (skin discoloration).
