Ed Benavente wrote everything he knew about Chamorro chiefs in a book, I Manmañaina-Ta. When the local rights activist began his research, he was looking to answer a question of faith. He wanted to know whether the Catholicism he faithfully practiced had been presented to his ancestors in peace, as he had learned in school, or if it had been imposed through bloodshed.
